Dutch fans urged to cover bases

Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - November 17, 2009

Dutch soccer fans gearing up for some hot off-the-field action during the 2010 World Cup are being urged to bring their own condoms to South Africa by the Dutch government.

The Netherlands was the first country to qualify for the World Cup and thousands of Orange Army fans determined to have a good time are expected in the country.

Dutch Health, Welfare and Sport Secretary Mariette Bussemaker told The Times: "We are expecting between 10,000 and 12,000 Dutch supporters at the World Cup. In Cape Town recently I was told that one of the problems during the world soccer championship will be the shortage of condoms.

"If the travelling fans think they might need condoms then they must bring their own. This is to prepare them against the risk of HIV/Aids and the Dutch football federation must educate and inform supporters to prevent the spread of the disease. This is just a precaution."

Orange Army fans will be following a star-studded Dutch team.
