One of the scientists who collaborated in the Thai trials, Col Nelson Michael, director of the US military's HIV research programme, said at the Aids Vaccine 2009 conference in Paris: "A study in a country like South Africa, where the scientific community is so robust and the sub-types of HIV are relatively few, would create a lot of interest."
A local trial would be unlikely to use the vaccine tested in Thailand because the subtype of the virus common in Thailand is rare here.
