In a statement this week, the Aids advocacy body's national committee said that if it did not retrench staff it would have to shut down next year.
A third of the TAC' s 95 permanent staff and more than half its 300 volunteers stand to lose their jobs, said TAC Gauteng provincial coordinator Gordon Mthembu.
The volunteers, 90% of whom are HIV-positive and breadwinners, educate communities about HIV and are paid monthly stipends of R2,000.
TAC management blames the recession and funding delays for the crisis. TAC founder Zachie Achmat refused to comment.
