US honour for top SA AIDS researcher

Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - October 21, 2007

South African academic and scientist Prof Jerry Coovadia has again been honoured for his HIV and Aids research.

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has conferred the Herman Gertrude Silver Award - for significant contributions in the field of paediatric HIV and Aids - on the 67-year-old researcher.

He began his research into mother-to-child transmission in 1990, despite a lack of funding. "Today the research is continuing. In our speciality research field of mother-to-child transmission and breast-feeding transmission, we probably did most of the work and best in the world," said Coovadia.

"Our international collaboration has led to more studies to reduce breast-feeding transmission. I am 90% certain that in three years we will be in a position, in principle, to find all the methods to reduce mother-to-child transmission in developing countries."

Prof Willem Sturm, dean of the University of KwaZulu-Natal's school of medicine, said: "The award not only recognises Prof Coovadia's work but, through him, also the leading role our medical school has played in research in the field of HIV infection and Aids."

Coovadia, who has received many accolades, is the Victor Daitz professor for HIV/Aids research, scientific director of the Doris Duke Medical Research Institute and director of the Centre for HIV/Aids Networking at UKZN.

Former president Nelson Mandela awarded him the Star of South Africa in 1999 for his contribution to democracy.
