Gabriel, Annie do it for Madiba

Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - October 16, 2007

Top musicians canÆt wait to rock Ellis Park.

Ellis Park is ready to rock, with international artists such as Peter Gabriel, Annie Lennox and Corinne Bailey Rae billed to perform in this yearÆs 46664 concert.

The star-studded line-up will also include the likes of rapper Ludacris, rock groups the Goo Goo Dolls, Razorlight, and British singer Jamalia.

Peter Gabriel and Annie Lennox took part in the first 46664 show in 2003.

Launched by Nelson Mandela, the aim of the annual concert is to raise funds for children living with HIV/Aids and those affected by the disease.

The name 46664 refers to MandelaÆs former prison number.

The concert, which will take place on December 1, World Aids Day, will be held in Johannesburg for the first time.

In previous years, the likes of singers and musicians Youssou NÆDour, Beyonce, Bono, Anastacia and Yusuf Islam - who used to be known as Cat Stevens - have been part of the concert.

American rapper Ludacris said: "It is a shame that after all these years we still have to raise awareness about a disease that continues to infiltrate communities, countries and families.

"But I am proud to be able to stand by Nelson Mandela, a man of dignity, power, strength and change, and one who always leads by example. I hope this concert will be another stepping stone to finding a cure."

Corinne Bailey Rae, who has taken the music industry by storm, said that she was honoured to have been invited to perform.

She said: "Nelson Mandela is someone who I have admired since I was a child.

"His application of forgiveness and justice is an example to the world, and I hope the concert will go a long way in raising awareness about HIV/Aids."

Mandela said: "46664 is committed to HIV/Aids awareness and prevention.

"We create and support initiatives that deliver sustainable solutions to help combat the pandemic."

He said Johannesburg had long asked to host the concert, and he was happy to deliver to the people of Johannesburg.

Tickets for the concert cost from R120 and are available from Computicket.
