Find out if we'll ever have a vaccine for AIDS

Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - October 5, 2007

World renowned biologist David Baltimore is to deliver the third annual Nelson Mandela Science Lecture at the University of the Witwatersrand today.

Dr Baltimore, a Nobel laureate and one of the world's most influential biologists, will talk about why viruses continue to threaten our lives.

He said: "Sometimes, science fails us, at least for a time, and one great failure has been its inability to develop an Aids vaccine.

"HIV, the cause of Aids, is a simple virus, not unlike viruses that we are well-protected against, like smallpox, polio or measles. So why do we fail with one virus and succeed with others? And what is a virus? Do viruses ever do anything good for us?

"Will we ever have a vaccine against HIV?"

Get the answers at the Mandela Science Lecture.
