Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - June 4, 2007
Tapologo Day, held last Friday, marked the launch of Positive 2007. Positive 2007 (15-17 June) is a huge fundraising drive that offers a festive weekend programme of music, fashion, art and culinary treats. International performer John Legend, who will perform on 16 and 17 June, is the big feature of the second annual Positive event.
The morning kicked off with musical performances by the Bala brothers and the Soweto Gospel Choir. After the musical showcase, the children and their favourite stars had fun painting on canvasses and each other!
MC of the event, actress Carmel Fisher said: "It's always better to come and be hands-on with the patients and with the children. Being positive is about really spending time".
R'n'B singer Loyiso Bala said the event was about showing "love and support and to ask artists and musicians to keep giving their time".
Head of Tapologo Aids Hospice, Bishop Kevin Dowling delivered a message of affirmation to the children of the Hospice describing Tapologo as "a model for community-centred and community-run centres". He added that this level of participation empowered the community.
Director of Resorts at Sun International, Philip Georgas said: "[At] this year's [Positive 2007] event we are hoping to raise R3 million so we can expand in this province. Being strictly in the North West wasn't enough [last year]". Georgas said the Hospice needs national recognition for it to implement a more efficient anti-retroviral programme.
Other celebrities at the launch included Model and TV personality Noni Gasa, Hip-Hop trio Morafe, singer Danny K and Deal or No Deal host Ed Jordan.
