Activist cracks nod as Aids body deputy

Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - May 20, 2007
Bobby Jordan

One of South Africa's leading Aids activists, Mark Heywood of the Treatment Action Campaign, has effectively replaced Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang as deputy chairman of the SA National Aids Coalition (Sanac).

The move is seen as a major boost to the new national Aids treatment plan that has accelerated the roll-out of antiretroviral drugs to Aids patients.

Sanac, which was relaunched last month under the chairmanship of Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Nqcuka, is responsible for monitoring and evaluating the national Aids policy.

The new council is more inclusive than the old one, which was dominated by government . It represents a wider spectrum of opinion and has committed itself to increasing levels of care to 80% of HIV/Aids sufferers and their families by 2011.

Heywood was elected last Friday at a formal sitting of all Sanac's civil society representatives.

Aids activist Zackie Achmat said: "This shows a unity and a trust between government and civil society that wasn't there before. It also means a lot more will get done."
