The 35-year-old councillor, whose name is known to the Sunday Times, was arrested on Friday, shortly after he had allegedly sent the woman a threatening cellphone text message.
The woman reported her lover of nearly three years on Wednesday, after he allegedly told her that he would infect other women because it was a woman who had infected him. He was asked to report on Friday to the Tlhabane Police Station, in Rustenburg, where he was arrested.
Tlhabane police spokesman Constable Sydney Mothobi yesterday confirmed that the councillor was in custody and said the charges being investigated against him included attempted murder, assault and rape.
"These are allegations and the case is still under investigation." Mothobi said the man would appear in the Tlhabane MagistrateÆs Court tomorrow, refusing to divulge further details. The woman made a four-page statement to the police, detailing how he had allegedly knowingly infected her.
She told the Sunday Times that she went to the police to stop him from spreading the virus. She said she got confirmation of his HIV status in June last year, after stumbling upon a document that showed his test results.
She claimed that when she confronted him he initially told her that he had withheld this information out of fear that she would dump him.
