Aids clinic hosts Miss Universe

Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - July 10, 2005

MISS Universe, Natalie Glebova, movie star Brad Pitt, billionaires Bill Gates and Sir Richard Branson have all had a common destination during their visits to South Africa - Hillbrow.

The celebrities have visited the Esselen Street Clinic, a leading HIV/Aids prevention and treatment clinic on the edge of the rundown flatland, to show support for its work.

This week, newly crowned Miss Universe, Canadian Natalie Glebova, chose the clinic and the Helen Joseph Hospital as her first stops on a world tour.

Pitt and Branson visited the clinic last November and the 41-year-old screen idol recently came back again .

Gates met former President Nelson Mandela at the clinic as far back as November 2003.

Glebova aspires to become a role model for HIV/Aids awareness during her reign and took an HIV test while she was at Helen Joseph's HIV clinic.

Wearing a beaded Aids ribbon, the 23-year-old beauty queen was surrounded by fans when she stepped through the metal detector at the doors to the Esselen Street clinic.

Inside the clinic, she spoke to HIV/Aids counsellors about their work and met patients at the sexually transmitted infections' clinic.

"This has opened my eyes and showed me a lot about the devastation of the pandemic around the world," she said.
