Board game helps kids cope with HIV-Aids

Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - December 8, 2004
Palesa Kobedi

A PIONEERING board game for children affected by HIV/Aids is helping families to come to terms with the disease. The game, called the Magical Aids Journey, helps youngsters explore their hopes and fears.

It was designed by Carin Marcus, a social worker and psychosocial training manager at the Hospice Association of the Witwatersrand.

The game helps children explore their emotional responses to their situation. This gives social workers an insight into the children's experiences.

Lauren Jankelowitz, a social worker who works with children from Soweto, Alexandra and inner Johannesburg, says: "It's a safe method for children to talk about how they feel about HIV and AIDS and to learn about their own sexuality. There might be help in terms of people who provide food and everything but there is often no emotional help for these children."

The board was drawn by artist Gloria Norton, a hospice patient who died from cancer in June.

The game - a journey through a maze - is played with dice and a category card. Players are guided over bridges and through water to magical places. Tricks and dead ends require them to make choices, while cards prompt them to answer questions.

*Only 1000 games have been printed, and 600 have been distributed. For more information, contact Samantha Stewart at 082 410-5743.
