Footballers against Aids

Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - August 31, 2003
Claire Keeton

Tembisa Classic Football Club soccer players have joined forces with the National Association of People Living with Aids (Napwa) to raise awareness of HIV/Aids.

Napwa national director, Nkululeko Nxesi, said: "The majority of infected or affected communities are black or African and soccer is their number one sport.

"We have been battling to get a platform to get direct access to them and now we can disseminate information at games."

This is the first time that a soccer team has committed to an initiative involving HIV/Aids, said Classic chief executive Vincent Mazibuko at the launch of the partnership on Thursday.

He said their first task would be to educate fans, players and management about the epidemic.

Classic's kit will be branded with the Napwa logo. Arrangements are also being finalised for an annual HIV/Aids Charity Cup, which will involve local teams from the Premier Soccer League as well as African teams.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to HIV/Aids projects.
