Gibson Kente to stage Aids play

Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - Sunday June 29, 2003
Lesley Mofokeng

Gibson Kente's dream project is finally taking off.

After he went public about being HIV-positive earlier this year, Kente started work on The Call, a story about living with HIV/Aids.

The veteran stage personality is now looking for dancers, singers and actors.

The show is to be staged at the State Theatre in Pretoria from August 14 to 16.

The Call is a story about a man who wants to bring hope to people living with HIV. The fictional character, Smudza, is a producer and a prot g of Kente, who will portray himself in the play.

Smudza believes a musical will have a great impact in spreading HIV/Aids information.

He forms a group called Friends, but problems arise when it is revealed that many of the members do not practise the safe sex that they preach.

Smudza is one of the culprits, putting his faith in muti from a sangoma instead of using protection.

Hopefuls can attend auditions at the Windybrow Theatre in Hillbrow from July 3 to 5, and the State Theatre from July 8 to 9.
