Charity nets fortune from Fish

Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - December 2, 2002
Jeremy Lawrence

SOUTH African-born Charlton Athletic defender Mark Fish this week donated £10 000 (about R147 000) to a South African-run charity in London dedicated to easing the plight of Aids orphans in KwaZulu-Natal.

Fish challenged other South African football players in the UK, including fellow Bafana Bafana teammates Lukas Radebe and Shaun Bartlett, to better his gift.

Andrea Linck of the charity organisation Starfish said Fish had made the donation at the charity's launch at the South African High Commission on Thursday.

"I realise now that sportsmen can have a greater influence on people than politicians," said Fish, who filled in for Radebe at the function as guest speaker.

Said Linck: "We were so bowled over by Mark's donation, and he was so touched by the desperation of these Aids orphans."

Founding member of Starfish, Anthony Farr said: "We are astounded by the response. We are excited by the potential these funds have to unlock real change in the fight against Aids in South Africa."

South Africa's HIV infection rate is among the highest in the world with around 2 000 new infections a day. There are 450 000 Aids orphans in South Africa.

Researchers say 10% of Aids orphans live in households headed by other children. They say older children often turn to sex work in order to feed their younger siblings, which robs them of their rights as children and perpetuates the spread of HIV/Aids.
