Prisoners Gang Up On Aids

Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - November 10, 2002
Buddy Naidu

SINGING star Brenda Fassie's former husband, Nhlanhla Mbambo, who is serving a 10-year jail term for murder, is spreading the gospel of HIV/Aids-prevention to fellow inmates.

Mbambo, 36, the chairman of the prisoners' Aids Control Committee at the Westville prison in Durban, has formed the body with other murderers, fraudsters and armed robbers from the jail's Medium B section.

At least 59 Medium B inmates died of Aids-related illnesses between March and September.

The project offers inmates Aids education, counselling and skills training . Mbambo has also distributed free condoms to inmates.

Other committee members include Clive Gounden, a mastermind behind the R31-million SBV robbery, and Anil Jelal, a former policeman who is serving time for murder.
