Sunday Times Crossword Fund gives R250 000 to orphans

Sunday Times (Johannesburg) - Sunday 24 February 2002

SUNDAY Times readers have heeded President Thabo Mbeki's state-of-the-nation call for South Africans to lend a hand and build a better life for all.

Moved by the plight of Aids orphans at the Ingwavuma Orphan Care in rural KwaZulu-Natal, the trustees of the Sunday Times Charity Crossword Fund pledged R250 000 to the project this year.

The money was raised by readers who entered our Charity Crossword (which came to an end a year ago) and will be used for school fees, food, clothing and facilitating foster care grants.

Mbeki told the joint sitting of Parliament and the National Council of Provinces: "The past year has brought to the fore many patriotic South Africans who have found a practical answer to [the question of] 'how I can lend a hand . . . to build a better life for all'."

The people of Ingwavuma have taken up the President's challenge and are actively working towards improving their lives. They responded to Mbeki's appeal when he said: "We have it within us as a nation to . . . forge a massive movement of volunteers - dedicated workers in all fields of life - and bring to life those enduring attributes of all our people, of perseverance and persistence in the struggle for our own good and the good of humanity."

Readers wishing to help further can make donations to Ingwavuma Orphan Care, Standard Bank, Empangeni Branch, cheque account 062013408, branch code 057530.
