Heroes in the war against AIDS

Sunday Times, South Africa - December 3, 2000

PROFESSOR Jerry Coovadia, head of Natal University's Department of Paediatrics, and Judge Edwin Cameron, a former Constitutional Court judge, jointly received the prestigious Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights this week for their "outstanding contribution" to the fight against AIDS.

The two men received the award during a three-hour extravaganza on SABC2 on Friday, World AIDS day.

Instituted in 1993, the award is sponsored by the US-based philanthropic trust the Henry J Kaiser Family Foundation, and recognises extraordinary dedication in the effort to improve health care in South Africa.

It entitles recipients to designate an organisation of their choice for a foundation grant of 10 000 (about R77 000) and to design a work-study tour in the US.

The foundation said Coovadia and Judge Cameron were cited for their outstanding commitment and contribution to the law, science and human understanding of the HIV epidemic.

Coovadia has for the past six years been at the forefront of research in South Africa into the causes and prevention of paediatric AIDS.

Justice Cameron was recently appointed to the Appeal Court. He made his HIV-positive status public in 1998.
