"I hope the people of South Africa embrace me and listen to what I have to say.
"It is important you pay attention to HIV/AIDS now. I'm really good at nagging people and maintaining contact; it's the trait of a good Catholic education," said Fitzwilliam.
Her itinerary includes being the guest of honour at the official opening of Nkosi's Haven in Berea, Johannesburg, on Wednesday.
A care centre for HIV/AIDS mothers and children, it is named in honour of 10-year-old Nkosi Johnson, with whom Fitzwilliam spent yesterday morning. The boy has full-blown AIDS and his battle to be accepted into school two years ago helped highlight the need for an official policy on the issue.
Fitzwilliam also hopes to see former Miss SA Kerishnie Naicker, with whom she shared a room at the Miss Universe pageant in Hawaii last May.
"I've spoken to her at least once a month since then. At first we didn't get the times right and we'd wake each other up in the middle of the night," she said, laughing.
The 25-year-old law student also laughed at the suggestion she was involved with West Indies cricket captain Brian Lara.
"I've known him forever. Trinidad is a small island and he went to the boys' high school close to mine. He calls me Tall-ie. I'm much taller than him and that's what all my friends call me - but there is no romantic involvement at all."
