Marin to display AIDS quilt Nov. 26

San Francisco Examiner - November 12, 2007

Sections of a handmade quilt memorializing people who have died AIDS-related deaths will be on display in locations throughout Marin County beginning Nov. 26, according to the Marin AIDS Project. The 54-ton quilt made of 47,000 panels will tour the county until World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, when a ceremony honoring local leaders will take place, according to organizers.

The ceremony, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Town Center Mall in Corte Madera, will celebrate the 2007 World AIDS Day theme of "Stop AIDS; Keep the Promise-Leadership," according to the Marin AIDS Project, which focuses on HIV, AIDS and Hepatitis C services.

Those who view the quilt, which was started with one square in San Francisco in 1987, are shown "the humanity behind the statistics," according to organizers.

"The quilt transforms statistics into souls, loss into hope, and indifference into understanding. These handmade blocks created by friends and family tell the stories of individuals who have lost their lives to AIDS," said Julie Rhoad, executive director of The NAMES Project Foundation, the custodian of the quilt.

The quilt will be on display at the Dominican University of California in San Rafael Nov. 26, the Marin City Senior Center in Marin City Nov. 28, the College of Marin in Kentfield Nov. 29, The Canal Welcome Center in San Rafael Nov. 29, The Pickleweed Community Center in San Rafael Nov. 30, and the Corte Madera Town Center Mall in Corte Madera Dec. 1.
