"There are several projects we could use the money for," said Dr. Dennis Israelski, the center's research director. "One possibility would be to try developing an earlier HIV test. A significant percentage of AIDS transmission comes from people immediately before they are diagnosed."
The medical center's AIDS research program is a partnership with Stanford University, the San Mateo County Health Department and the San Francisco Public Health Department.
"The other four recipients of this year's Universitywide AIDS Research Grants are all universities," Israelski said. "It's a big honor that our public hospital research program is judged important enough to be in such company."
The new $2 million AIDS grant will be counted as a match toward the San Mateo Medical Center Foundation's Keller Challenge, a $4 million matching fund from longtime hospital benefactors George and Addie Keller.
