Sheehy, currently the deputy director for communications at the University of California, San Francisco's AIDS Research Institute, will assist Mayor Gavin Newsom in crafting AIDS policies and programs, as well as studying issues and reporting to the mayor.
Sheehy is a well-known member of The City's gay community and formerly served in the District Attorney's Office as a hate-crime victim's advocate.
"Jeff has been in the forefront of HIV/AIDS issues in San Francisco for over a decade," Newsom said in a release. "His background and work in this field will be a tremendous asset in our quest to fight this epidemic."
Currently a volunteer position, the "AIDS Czar" post and its support staff have in the past been funded by The City.
"I think it's good that Mayor Newsom has made the appointment," said Bill Barnes, who formerly held the post and now works as an aide for Supervisor Chris Daly. "The City has already lost $4 million in federal Ryan White Care funding. There is nobody better than Jeff to fight to help get that back."
