Candidate gets jump on biggest problem

San Francisco Examiner - August 19, 2002
Adriel Hampton Of The Examiner Staff

Bevan Dufty doesn't want to wait for a ballot victory to help The City's homeless and drug addicted.

In addition to using his campaign office for the usual flurry of political activity, the District 8 supervisorial candidate is co-opting his Castro headquarters to train a team of outreach volunteers -- all with the goal of tackling The City's thorniest problem.

"As San Franciscans, we share some laudable objectives, but it's all about how that translates into real life," Dufty, who endorses the Care Not Cash ballot initiative, recently told The Examiner. "I don't believe it is compassionate to leave people dying and strung out in our streets."

The City's former director of neighborhood services is asking for locals, especially those with experience in supportive services, to join the outreach squad, which will inform homeless youths and adults about services, advocate for them and help fill out housing applications.

Millie Valdes, one of The City's foremost problem fixers until her retirement last year, and Hunter Mills, an experienced homeless and HIV outreach worker, will train volunteers at Dufty's Market Street campaign office.

City trouble spots -- such as Market Street -- are no secret and need pragmatic solutions, Dufty said.

"Anyone living in District 8, especially the Castro, understands that the homeless situation has become overwhelming," Dufty said in a release. "If my campaign can, in any way, be a catalyst to help at-risk individuals access shelter or transitional housing, drug treatment or other services, I want to make that happen."

The first outreach training takes place Thursday at 6 p.m., 2344 Market St. Call 355-9888 for more information.
