Come walk for a good cause at the fourth annual East Bay AIDS Walk in Oakland this weekend. Walkers last years raised more than $50,000, and proceeds benefit local AIDS organizations in the East Bay.
Joining the walk is free, but walkers are encouraged to seek donations from colleagues, friends and family. If you're not interested in walking but want to help, you can sponsor a participant, donate money or volunteer.
Free. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Walk begins at 10 a.m. at Lake Merritt (Bellevue and Grand avenues). Meet on the lawn in front of the Edoff Memorial Bandstand, across from the Lakeside Park Garden Center. Stick around afterward for barbecue and entertainment. (888) 510-3229, www.eastbayaidswalk.org.
Family bike day
Rally the kids, grab the bikes and pedal over to Golden Gate Park for the San Francisco Bike Coalition's second annual Family Day. The event takes place in a closed-off section of the park, so riders won't have to worry about cars.
Check out the bike road-eo, which teaches kids basic bike safety skills, a Freedom From Training Wheels group effort to get kids riding on two wheels, and a family bike parade. Mechanics will be there to help get your bikes rolling, and certified bike safety instructors will also be on hand. Don't forget your helmet.
Free. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Golden Gate Park, off John F. Kennedy Drive at the 14th Avenue E Picnic Area (west of the Rose Garden and east of Transverse Drive). (415) 431-2453, www.sfbike.org/family_day.
Tour de Tahoe
The fifth annual Tour de Tahoe is a grueling 72-mile bike ride around Lake Tahoe, and it's not for beginners. Course includes a couple of hefty vertical climbs and many short ascents and descents. The altitude ranges from 6,300 to 7,100 feet. There are four 15-minute start windows from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
For a more recreational ride, sign up for the Boat Cruise and 35-mile Lake Tahoe Half Ride Fun Tour instead. It includes a scenic boat ride to North Lake Tahoe, followed by a 35-mile ride back to the Lake Tahoe Horizon Casino Resort. Ride starts at 6:45 a.m. The boat cruise to North Lake Tahoe and back is open to friends and family who are interested in accompanying participants across the lake.
Preregistration for both the 72-mile and 35-mile rides has closed, but those still interested can sign up from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday at Tahoe Sports Ltd in the Village Shopping Center on Highway 50 and Heavenly Village Way in South Lake Tahoe. Riders can also register on race morning from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. at the Lake Tahoe Horizon Casino Resort on Highway 50, Stateline, South Shore Lake Tahoe.
All riders must wear a helmet. Stick around afterward for pool party, meal and entertainment at the Horizon Casino Resort. 72-mile race, $110; boat cruise and 35-mile ride, $115; boat cruise only, $110. (800) 565-2704, links.sfgate.com/ZESB.
