Frameline names K.C. Price executive director

San Francisco Chronicle - July 18, 2008
Jesse Hamlin,jhamlin@sfchronicle.com.

Frameline, the San Francisco nonprofit that puts on America's oldest gay film festival and runs other film and video programs in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, has hired Kenneth C. Price, an arts administrator who once served as the group's development director, as its new executive director.

Price replaces Michael Lumpkin, who resigned earlier this month after 28 years with Frameline, which brings in 60,000 to 80,000 or more people a year to its film festival at the Castro and other theaters in the city and in Berkeley.

"Working for and with Frameline for almost nine years, I' ve had a unique opportunity to participate in its development and growth," said Price, 46. The future of LBGT films and Frameline's festival "is really promising right now," he added, "and a lot of great movies are being made by and for our community. To be at the forefront of this cinema with such a highly respected organization is an incredible honor."

Asked about his plans, Price, known as K.C., said, "We want the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival to remain what it has been for so long: the most exciting and extensive showcase for queer cinema in the world."

Price is currently managing director of the Ninth Street Media Consortium, of which Frameline is a member. In that job, which he's held since 2003, he has created collaborations among local media-arts groups, developed programs and raised money for capital projects, programs and day-to-day operations. From 1999 to 2003, he was development director at Frameline, where he raised corporate sponsorships and increased membership, developed and produced a "Visionaries of Modern Cinema" film series and re-established Frameline's funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Before that, Price, who teaches a course on grant writing in the technical and professional writing program at San Francisco State University, was development director at Stop AIDS Project, a San Francisco nonprofit working to prevent the spread of HIV.

A native of Charlotte, N.C., Price has a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and master's in arts from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

In addition to the annual film festival, Frameline distributes films, funds the creation of film and video art and runs an outreach and education program in the LGBT community. "We want to continue this amazing work and expand on it," Price said.

Lumpkin, who worked with Price for many years, praised him and said, "I think K.C. will bring to Frameline the leadership and resources the organization will need as it heads into the future."
