Lively send-off for LifeCyclers: Thousands are taking a week to ride to Los Angeles and raise millions to support the fight against AIDS

San Francisco Chronicle - June 2, 2008

Liz Wright of Hollywood, at center above, is one of 3,000 bicyclists who embarked Sunday morning on the weeklong, 545-mile AIDS/LifeCycle fundraising ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Wright, who is riding in honor of an uncle who died of AIDS, has raised almost $5,000 for AIDS prevention. She gets a high-five from a stranger outside the Cow Palace. Supporters, top, cheer and wave signs as the riders depart. Dressed as angels, Irene Kelly of Redondo Beach (Los Angeles County) and Lenore Cymes of Palo Alto, at left, give a rider encouragement. Cycling participants ranged in age from 18 to 81, according to the ride's organizers. The event, now in its seventh year, was expected to generate $11 million for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, two large AIDS service organizations. An estimated 160,000 Californians are living with HIV or AIDS, organizers said.
