San Francisco/$100 million housing fund is proposed

San Francisco Chronicle - August 16, 2007
Wyatt Buchanan

Two San Francisco supervisors want to change the city's charter to create a $100 million annual fund for affordable housing.

Supervisors Chris Daly and Tom Ammiano filed the charter amendment Tuesday, the deadline for such measures to make the February ballot. The proposal would establish base funding for affordable housing at $66.9 million. The remainder of the fund, about $33 million the first year, would come from a percentage of assessed property taxes, according to the measure's sponsors. It would expire in 15 years.

The measure needs the board's approval to get on the ballot. The money would be split among several priorities, including building, buying and maintaining two-bedroom units for low-income people; rental assistance for low-income people who have HIV; homeowner - and tenant - assistance programs; and repairs on public housing.
