A panel discussion called "Life of Hope: The Black LGBT Spirituality Forum" at Glide Memorial United Methodist Church in San Francisco's Tenderloin included representatives from Christian, Buddhist and other faiths. Speakers encouraged religious groups to unite with the black gay community.
"If the church does not respond by opening its arms ... I don't think the church is going to last that much longer," the Rev. Cecil Williams of Glide said. "What we got to do is wake up the church."
The discussion was hosted by the Black Brothers Esteem program, an affiliate of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, which recently surveyed more than 10 churches in the Bay Area that welcome the gay community and those living with HIV and AIDS into their congregations.
The results of the survey are available at www.sfaf.org/bbe.
