Day of awareness for Asians with AIDS

San Francisco Chronicle - May 19, 2005
Vanessa Hua

The Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center in San Francisco is launching a national initiative today to foster acceptance of people in those communities with HIV and AIDS.

The awareness day kicks off at 5 p.m. with a free one-hour display of quilts honoring Asian Americans who have died of AIDS. The quilts will be shown at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, 701 Mission St.

Also today, the wellness center will start a campaign in the Chinese American community with television and bus shelter ads in San Francisco and will launch an online petition against HIV discrimination at www.banyantreeproject.org.

Similar events are planned in Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, Honolulu, New York and Boston.
