Mayor acts to curb boom in meth use

Concerned that methamphetamine is increasingly being used as a party drug, especially among gays, and fosters the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, Mayor Gavin Newsom and Supervisor Bevan Dufty announced the creation of a citywide task force to address the problem.

Dr. Steven Tierney, director of HIV prevention for the Department of Public Health, who will co-chair the group with Dufty, estimated that up to 20 percent of the city's gays have used the drug.
