San Francisco Chronicle - Thursday, July 10, 2003
The commission will investigate how the AIDS epidemic, which has killed an estimated 20 million people during the past two decades, threatens the stability of African government and society.
Debas, 66, served 10 years as the medical school's dean. He will continue to work at UCSF, where he is developing a new interdisciplinary program to perform research on global health concerns such as HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and other undertreated diseases.
The United Nations' 16-member commission was formed in February. Its charter, Debas said, is to produce a report in two years with recommendations on how to fight diseases across Africa and how to address the impact of this health crisis on the ability of African states to develop their economies.
