Lee, one of Congress' main proponents of increased funding for the fight against HIV and AIDS, was on hand when Bush signed a bill authorizing $15 billion for the global AIDS fight. The president even thanked her by name in his remarks. She was also in the White House East Room in April when Bush made a pitch for the legislation.
Lee, who co-chairs the House Progressive Caucus, made it clear that the AIDS issue is probably a one-time alliance with the Republican president.
"I don't agree with him on the economy," Lee said. "I don't agree with him on tax cuts or the lack of commitment to create jobs. I don't agree with him on foreign policy, and I don't agree with his administration's policy of cutting into civil liberties and civil rights, and I don't agree with him on the environment.
"And I can keep going on and on," she said. "There's no way I can agree with the Bush administration on 95 percent of its agenda."
