Community Service Ordered for 2 in ACT UP

San Francisco Chronicle - Wednesday, December 20, 2000

San Francisco -- Two members of the AIDS dissident group ACT UP/San Francisco have been sentenced to community service for staging a noisy protest in October inside a nonprofit organization, authorities said this week.

Ronnie Burk, 45, and Betty Best, 40, must complete 25 hours of community service at nonprofit arts and animal groups and abide by orders from Superior Court Judge Patrick Mahoney to stay away from the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

The sentence, handed down earlier this month, stems from the pair's arrest on Oct. 23 after storming into the offices of the foundation, shouting through bullhorns, tossing pamphlets and condoms.

Each was charged with disturbing the peace, trespassing and graffiti. Best had an additional charge of battery for allegedly injuring a security guard.

Since the mid-'90s, ACT UP/San Francisco has clashed with mainstream AIDS organizations over its belief that HIV does not cause AIDS. The Oct. 23 protest was in response to an ad the AIDS Foundation had placed in a gay paper that the group disagreed with.
