Grants Available For Small-Scale AIDS Education

San Francisco Chronicle - Thursday, December 7, 2000

Contra Costa Health Services announced it will offer grants to community members who want to be hosts at small AIDS education events.

The county is soliciting grant applications this month for AIDS Awareness events next year. The county has found that smaller events promote more meaningful discussions than big events, such as fairs.

In past years, events have included baby showers at prenatal guidance centers; an AIDS candlelight dinner for couples; a "Festival of Life" block party and a production of a high school drama about homosexuality, drug abuse and bisexuality. The county grants are designed to support events scheduled during AIDS Awareness Month in May.

Events should reach at least 10 people, but no more than 30 people. The county's AIDS Program will help plan the event and supply educational materials. The county did not say exactly how much money will be made available.

There are currently about 625 people with AIDS in Contra Costa County. An estimated 4,900 county residents have been infected with HIV. Infection through heterosexual sex is the fastest growing mode of infection, according to county statistics.

For information or to request an application for a grant, contact Contra Costa Health Services' AIDS Program at (925) 313-6772.
