Two Arrested in Protest At AIDS Foundation

San Francsico Chronicle - Wednesday, October 25, 2000

Police arrested two members of ACT-UP/San Francisco this week after they allegedly shoved their way into the offices of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

ACT-UP/San Francisco members, who maintain that HIV does not cause AIDS, allegedly threw flyers and shouted through a bullhorn Monday, protesting a recent advertisement in a gay newspaper highlighting rising HIV infection rates among gay men in San Francisco. The ad uses profanity that ACT-UP/San Francisco members found offensive, said member David Pasquarelli.

"To blame gay men with profanity in an ad is unacceptable, and we will not tolerate it," Pasquarelli said.

A spokeswoman for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation defended the contents of the advertisement and condemned ACT-UP's protest.

"They have a right to disagree, but they don't have a right to come into a client-service setting, taking pictures and abridging people's confidence," said Susan Haikalis, the foundation's director of HIV services.

ACT-UP/San Francisco member Betty Best, 40, of San Francisco, was arrested and cited for battery and trespassing, and member Ronnie Burk, 45, of San Francisco, was cited for trespassing. Best allegedly scratched a security guard's face while being removed from the office.
