S.F. Mayor Brown Honors Testers of AIDS Drugs 33 from city are in nationwide trial

San Franciscans who put their bodies on the line by taking part in clinical research for an AIDS vaccine were honored yesterday by Mayor Willie Brown. In the year since President Clinton called for the development of a vaccine against the disease, Bay Area volunteers and companies have rushed to take up the challenge. "(San Francisco) runs one of the few health departments that is engaged in HIV research," Brown said, declaring the first HIV/AIDS Vaccine Awareness Day. "It obviously is a very dreaded disease, one we must never cease fighting." Brown and Susan Bockbinder, director of the HIV research section of the city's Department of Public Health, said 33 San Franciscans are enrolled in a nationwide trial being conducted by the department's HIV research section. The trial uses two vaccines. One is manufactured by Chiron, an Emeryville biotechnology company, and the other is made by Pasteur Merieux Connaught of France. The vaccine trials have shown promise but are still in the early stages, officials said. Earlier this year, the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution thanking participants in the vaccine trials for their contributions. "Many individuals have come forward and put themselves at risk," Bockbinder said. "San Francisco General Hospital served as a pivotal site of testing new AIDS vaccines."
