The survey, led by Brown University's Dr. Michael Stein, found that four out of every 10 people infected with HIV said nothing about their condition to their sexual partners. And two-thirds of those who stayed silent did not use a condom, the researchers found.
Those with multiple sexual partners were three times less likely to be honest with their partners. And men chose full disclosure much less often than women.
The fact that there are amoral individuals who have no compunction about threatening the lives of others by saying nothing about the contagious disease they carry is no surprise. But seeing the extent of the deadly deception through hard numbers is and should be shocking.
By now, when almost 400,000 Americans have died of AIDS and the dangers evident, there should be no need to remind people that they must assume responsibility for their actions and make sure they do not have unprotected sex.
However, the Brown study shows that constant reminders are justified.
