Two thousand people are expected for the National AIDS Update Conference at Civic Auditorium, which begins today and continues through Friday. This year's theme: "HIV and the Changing Healthcare Environment."
Leading researchers will report on basic progress in the fight against the disease; physicians will describe new medical treatments for attacking the virus that causes AIDS; and policy experts will report on new developments in Congress and government agencies.
The conference program features nearly 100 specialized workshops on topics as varied as meeting the expenses of AIDS therapy; dealing with substance abuse; HIV prevention; education for gays, prisoners and minority communities; the politics and ethics of vaccine trials; and alternative approaches to healing.
Among the featured speakers at morning plenary sessions will be Dr. Sandra Hernandez, director of the San Francisco Health Department; Patricia Fleming, President Clinton's AIDS policy director; Max Essex, chairman of Harvard University's AIDS Institute; Paul Kawata, executive director of the National Minority AIDS Council; and Dr. Mervyn Silverman, president of the American Foundation for AIDS Research.
The conference chair is Dr. Mary Pittman, president of the American Hospital Association's Hospital Research and Education Trust.
The conference program also includes an arts exhibition, AIDS theater and film festivals, and a series of roundtable discussions for participants.
