A temporary committee had recommended that the Los Angeles Unified School District reject the video, "Time Out: The Truth About HIV, AIDS and You." But the district has decided to submit the video to a regular committee in November, said district spokeswoman Diana Munatones.
Meanwhile, teachers can buy the video independently and show it in class if they have principal and parental permission, Munatones said.
The video, which rents for free at most stores, was released Tuesday by Arsenio Hall Communications in association with Paramount Pictures. A four-member committee of educators criticized the video for its graphic language, its length and its structure. Committee members who met in the summer said the 42-minute video was too long and did not leave time for classroom discussion.
A Paramount spokesman complained that the video never was submitted to the school district for review. The video was sent to a school board member for a possible endorsement and then forwarded from there to the district's video review committee in the summer.
