Calypte founder Howard Urnovitz, 37, continues as president and chief scientific officer.
A Xoma alumnus and former Medical Research Institute senior scientist, Urnovitz predicts that non-invasive urine testing for the HIV virus will be "a reality in the near future . . . I believe these tests will be safer for healthcare workers and expand HIV testing, which is a critical challenge at this stage of the AIDS epidemic."
Last month, Professor Luc Montagnier, 59, of the Institut Pasteur in Paris, joined Calypte's scientific advisory board. The French virologist is the discoverer of the human immunodeficiency virus.
The 15-employee Calypte firm, funded largely by Quest Ventures of Menlo Park and Japan's Otsuka pharmaceutical company, is named for the California hummingbird.
