UCSF to Test Experimental AIDS Vaccine

San Francisco Chronicle - The Voice of the West, 901 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94119 - THURSDAY December 13, 1990 Edition: FINAL Section: NEWS Page: A8 Word Count: 241

A new experimental AIDS vaccine, approved for human trials in California earlier this year, will undergo safety testing in the first group of American volunteers by scientists at the University of California at San Francisco and the University of Southern California, officials announced yesterday.

Dr. James Kahn, a UCSF AIDS specialist at San Francisco General Hospital, will head the study there and is now recruiting 12 healthy men and women who are between the ages of 18 and 50 and who are not infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Twelve more will be given the vaccine at USC.

The vaccine, called HGP-30, is a completely synthetic version of a single protein contained in the core of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome, and there is no risk to the volunteers of becoming infected with the virus, Kahn said. Volunteers who wish to participate in the trials can call Kahn at 821-5531.

Earlier safety trials of the vaccine have already been conducted in England, and after a year, none of the volunteers reported any problems. Much more extensive tests will be needed, however, to determine whether the vaccine is effective, Kahn said.

Scientists at George Washington University in St. Louis, headed by Dr. Allan L. Goldstein, conducted the original research that synthesized the protein, and the vaccine was developed by two small biotechnology firms, Alpha-1 Biomedicals Inc. of Alexandria, Va., and the CELL-SCI Corp. of Washington, D.C.
