Celebrating life at 46664

South African Press Association - December 3, 2007

Laughing and waving at the 15000 strong crowd, former president Nelson Mandela was again the star attraction at the Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg this weekend.

Mandela appeared at the fifth international 46664 Aids concert, held on Saturday as part of World Aids Day.

Sporting a sweatshirt with the number 46664 emblazoned on it, Mandela lent his own "Madiba Magic" to an event packed with local and international stars.

Mandela said it was heartening to see a decline in the number of people being infected with Aids, but more could still be done.

"This lower figure suggests that prevention programmes have been successful in bringing down infection rates," Mandela said.

"That trend is encouraging, but it is still alarming that for every person receiving treatment, four others are newly infected."

Stars at the event included bands Razorlight, Ludacris and the Goo Goo Dolls.

Local stars Freshlyground reminded the crowd to be thankful they were "alive and well".

Singer Peter Gabriel performed his song Biko, named after the anti- apartheid activist Steve Biko.

Gabriel said the same power and intensity used to fight apartheid should be shown in the fight against HIV-Aids.
