Ministry: Skweyiya did not snub Aids conference

South African Press Association - June 8, 2007

Media reports of Social Development Minister Zola Skweyiya having "snubbed" the South African National Aids Conference in Durban are incorrect, the ministry said on Friday.

"The ministry has never confirmed the participation of Dr Skweyiya at this conference, and the organisers were informed that he would not be available to attend and deliver the lecture," it said in a statement.

The reason for this was Skweyiya was currently hosting his counterparts from the Southern African Development Community and Latin American countries at an international social protection conference in Cape Town -- the conference had started on Thursday and would end on Saturday.

The ministry said it was unfortunate the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) had not checked with it "before publicising the inaccuracy".
