Government vows to intensify Aids campaign

South African Press Association - December 2, 2004

The government vowed on Wednesday to intensify its comprehensive campaign against HIV/Aids - including prevention, treatment and home-based care.

At its final meeting of the year in Pretoria, the Cabinet noted that the number of people receiving anti-retroviral therapy had increased to just under 20,000 by the end of October.

The number of people making use of voluntary counselling and testing services rose from 412,696 in 2002/03 to 690,537 in 2003/04.

"Government wishes on this day (World Aids Day) to express its solidarity with those affected by HIV and Aids and it vows to intensify all elements of the campaign, working with structures of civil society," Cabinet said.
