HIV among Gauteng babies declines

South African Press Association - November 22, 2004

The HIV/Aids infection rate among babies in Gauteng was declining and the province's antenatal survey also showed a declined in the HIV rate, premier Mbhazima Shilowa said on Monday.

Tabling the province's annual HIV/Aids report in the legislature, he said a growing number of South Africans understood the seriousness of the disease and were prepared to do something about it.

The survey showed that 80% of adults understood the key issues around Aids, and youths under 25 had made significant changes in their sexual behaviour.

The province had embarked on a large number of awareness activities and by mid November 2004, 19 out of the targeted 23 public health facilities were providing antiretroviral therapies.

Gauteng was carrying out one of the largest prevention of mother to child treatment programmes in southern Africa, Shilowa said.

Antiretroviral drugs were provided to 13,130 HIV-positive mothers and 10,469 babies.

During the year under review, 25,000 children were put onto poverty alleviation programmes to help them cope with the social affect of the disease.

Shilowa urged companies which did not yet have a workplace Aids programme to start one urgently.

"Do it for the well-being of your employees and your business, but also for the health of the economy," he said.
