Madiba launches Aids hotline

South African Press Association - November 24, 2004

South Africans can call the Nelson Mandela Foundation's toll-free number to donate their talents, time and skills to the fight against HIV/Aids.

The number 08000-46664 was launched on Tuesday and is the cornerstone of the 46664 volunteer campaign for World Aids Day on December 1.

The 46664 campaign is a Nelson Mandela Foundation initiative to encourage volunteerism.

"46664 represents the coming together of our young nation in what is perhaps our greatest challenge to date. 46664 will not only address the needs of people affected by HIV/Aids but will imbue a sense of national solidarity," said the foundation's chief executive John Samuel.

Until year end, volunteers who call the number to offer their assistance will have their details recorded in a database.

They will then receive an information pack informing them of non-governmental organisations involved in the fight against HIV/Aids and in need of their services.

The 46664 call centre also teamed up with the Department of Health's national Aids helpline. This would enable the call centre to answer general enquiries about HIV/Aids.
