A total of 66,000 candles are to be lit at the main event at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The event was being organised by World Vision, an international Christian relief and development organisation, said World Vision spokesman Alfred Chirwa.
Each candle will be sponsored with a donation of 70 cents by members of the public.
Elsewhere in the country, many churches, individuals and organisations will also light candles as a symbol of hope for those living with HIV/Aids.
World Vision was working with more than 46 South African tertiary institutions, businesses, churches and NGOs to fund and host the event, Chirwa said.
Dignitaries from the World Health Organisation, the ambassadors of Norway and Sweden and the Free State education MEC Mantsheng Tsopo are expected to attend.
