Knowledge is power, says health department

South Africa Press Association - June 2, 2004

About 11 million copies of an HIV/Aids and treatment booklet are being distributed nationally as part of the government's Aids action plan.

Spokesperson for the plan, Thami Skenjana, said on Wednesday that the 49-page booklet contained detailed information on how HIV/Aids was transmitted and how it could be prevented.

It also explained how a person could know his or her HIV status and what antiretroviral treatment was.

The booklet had been printed in all officials languages, she said in a statement.

"Our foremost priority is to mobilise all South Africans to know our HIV status by going for voluntary counselling and testing. This enables us to manage our health - whether or not we are infected with HIV," she said.

Skenjana said prevention messages remained the foundation of the government's HIV/Aids communications, because the overwhelming majority of South Africans were not infected with HIV.

The booklets would be distributed door-to-door throughout the country.
