Cape Town: Health Department to Develop Anti-Retroviral Program

South African Press Association (Johannesburg) - August 9, 2003

Cabinet has given the department of health until the end of September to develop a detailed operational plan on an anti-retroviral treatment programme.

This follows a special cabinet meeting in Pretoria today, on a report by a joint health and treasury task team that looked into Aids treatment options in the public sector.

In a statement released this afternoon, cabinet confirmed government's approach that anti-retroviral drugs do help improve the quality of life of those at a certain stage of the development of Aids, if administered properly.

It was also noted that, as it considered details pertaining to the enhanced treatment programme, it was critical that South Africa did not lower its guard as there was no cure for Aids.

Traditional healers speak out Meanwhile Patekile Holomisa, the congress of Traditional Leaders president, says they are committed to the fight against the spread of HIV/Aids.

Speaking at the launch of the first ever Eastern Cape Traditional Leaders's Forum at Mngqesha Great Place outside King William's Town, Holomisa said other forums in other provinces are also being set up to fight the disease. Holomisa says the main challenge is to encourage their subjects to talk openly about sex.

Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, the Minister of Health, will hand over certificates to traditonal leaders who have undergone a course on HIV/Aids. The function is to be held in East London later this evening.
