South African Press Association (Johannesburg) - January 17, 2003
John Samuel, chief executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, told Sapa: "We have concluded that the concert cannot take place since the proposed producers were not able to come to a satisfactory agreement with the Foundation,"
He also confirmed that the decision to cancel the event was taken to avoid any embarrassment if arrangements and agreements could not be concluded in the time available.
"We were overwhelmed with the enthusiastic response from international artists to Madiba's call for them to support the proposed Human Rights Concert," Samuel said.
"We value their commitment to South Africa. We would also like to acknowledge the support of the South African sponsors and Real Concerts for its efforts."
Among the artists who were lined up for the event were The Eurythmics' Dave Stewart, Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), Bono, Macy Gray, Nelly Furtado, Jimmy Cliff, Shaggy and a number of South African acts.
