Franks was due to appear at an International Jazz Against HIV/AIDS Concert at the Standard Bank arena in Johannesburg on Saturday as well as concerts in Pretoria on Sunday, Cape Town on October 9 and Durban on October 11.
Asked why Franks had decided not to come to South Africa, the promoter of the tour, Morris Rhoda, told Sapa there were "a lot of issues that one cannot pin point". He declined to detail the reasons.
Rhoda said he hoped to stage the tour in November once he had got new commitments from Franks.
Computicket client services manager Alife Reid said the ticketing company had suspended all sales for the Franks tour on Friday morning and would refund members of the public who had already bought tickets.
Only around 1200 tickets had been sold for the tour so far, Reid said.
The sponsors of the tour included the South African Post Office, MTN and SAA, and the Sowetan, Kaya FM and SAfm were the media partners.
